The Hazeltine Story
Hazeltine National Golf Club, located in Chaska, Minnesota, boasts a rich history as one of America's premier championship golf courses. Founded in 1962 by Totton P. Heffelfinger, a former president of the United States Golf Association (USGA), the club was established with the mission of creating a course suitable for national championships.
Designed by renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., Hazeltine opened for play in the same year. Initially named "The Executive Golf Club," the course was soon renamed Hazeltine National Golf Club in honor of the adjoining Lake Hazeltine.
The club quickly made its mark on the golfing world by hosting its first major championship, the U.S. Women's Open, in 1966, which was won by Sandra Spuzich. However, the course faced criticism during the 1970 U.S. Open due to its difficulty and the challenging windy conditions.
In response, significant modifications were made over the following years. Robert Trent Jones Sr. undertook several changes to enhance the course's playability while preserving its challenging nature. His son, Rees Jones, has continued this legacy of refinement in recent years.
Hazeltine has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including multiple U.S. Opens, PGA Championships, the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship, and U.S. Women's Opens, solidifying its reputation in the golfing community. In 2016, the club gained international attention when it hosted the Ryder Cup, with the U.S. team emerging victorious.
Looking ahead, Hazeltine is set to become the first U.S. venue to host the Ryder Cup twice, with the event returning in 2029.
Throughout its history, Hazeltine National Golf Club has consistently fulfilled its founders' vision of providing an exceptional golfing experience while serving as a premier venue for major championships.
